Managing Patients with Raised Cholesterol: Offering Statin & Lipid-Lowering Therapy

Step 1: Enable the Simple Statin Ruleset

To get started:

• Go to the User Management Portal
• Navigate to the Rules Management Section
• Search for Simple_Statin.
• Enable the rules included within this Ruleset to access a collection of rules designed to help you manage patients who may benefit from statin therapy.
  
  

Step 2: Identify Relevant Patients

You can find your patient cohorts using the following steps:

• Open the Proactive Monitoring Tool
• Navigate to Population View
• Using the Filter pane on the left-hand side enter 'Offer Statin Therapy' in the Task filter 
  
  

This will return patients who fall under the following eligibility criteria:

• • Primary Cardiovascular Disease Prevention - Patients with an established risk of cardiovascular disease (QRISK > 10%) should be considered for statin therapy 
  • Secondary Cardiovascular Disease Prevention - Patients with a history of cardiovascular disease should be offered statin therapy

Patients will be excluded from this list if they:

• • • Have been prescribed a statin in the past 6 months
    • Are allergic or intolerant to statins
    • Have declined a statin in the past 12 months

Step 3: Send a Statin Offer Questionnaire

Use the Message function to send a statin offer questionnaire to the identified cohort. You can also set up a recall to continue identifying eligible patients and send them the questionnaire automatically.

Patient responses will be categorized as:

• ✅ Accepted a statin.
• ✅ Declined a statin but accepted alternative lipid-lowering therapy.
• ❌ Declined both statin and alternative therapy.
• ❓ Requested more information.
  
  

Step 4: Set Up a Recall

Create a recall for patients who:

• Accepted a statin
• Accepted alternative lipid-lowering therapy
• Requested more information
  
  
  

Additional Filtering

To view patients who are ineligible for statin therapy (e.g., not tolerated, palliative, declined, or contraindicated in the past 12 months), use Advanced Filters and search for:

Register of patients who are ineligible for a statin 

This will populate a list of patients who have not tolerated, palliative, declined or contra-indicated Statin in past 12 months

You can also view patients who have been coded in the last 12 months as declined both Statin and Lipid Lowering Therapy, use Advanced Filters and search for:

Register of Patients who have declined Statin or LLT
