  3. Where to start with automating recalls

You may be wondering where is best to start when it comes to automating your recalls! We've put together some top-tips from other practices that may help 😊

Start with automating a recall that doesn't require appointments!

CQC rules stipulate that any patient on SGLT2 inhibitors requires annual drug safety advice regarding the risk of Fournier’s Gangrene and Diabetic Ketoacidosis.

One of our practices found that despite their clinicians explaining this verbally, this was not coded correctly and therefore they had no way of proving this when it came to CQC inspection.

One of the Abtrace team worked with the Practice Manager to quickly set this up as an automation. This took 5 minutes to go complete and 4 simple steps:

  • Search for SGLT2 inhibitors in the Abtrace Population View indications
  • Search for Education about Fournier’s Gangrene and Education about DKA in the Tasks
  • Select those who are overdue
  • Save as an automated message

The patient message that this practice added is below, this is just an example - please do check with your clinical team before implementing.

Patients on certain medications must receive annual drug safety advice. Our records show you are taking Empagliflozin/Canagliflozin/Dapagliflozin.  Seek urgent medical help if you experience pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling in the genital/perineal area, especially if accompanied by fever/malaise. Watch for signs of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), including nausea, vomiting, fast breathing, abdominal pain, unusual drowsiness, fruity-smelling breath. If develop any of these symptoms please contact the surgery.

The automation will run every week, picking up any new patients that need to receive side effect education. Patients who receive the message will be excluded from the automation until next year when they will automatically be messaged their annual advice again!
